San Diego, California – Great news! According to a new study from the folks at Wallethub, San Diego broke into the top 10 healthiest cities in the United States.
How did we get here? Researchers broke down a variety of factors ranging from food resources, fitness, green spaces, and healthcare availability in more than 180 cities across the U.S.
San Diego scored 62.62, right behind San Francisco, who scored 68.05. While San Diego hit the fifth spot for food and the sixth spot for green space access, it falls behind in healthcare and fitness (numbers 53 and 45, respectively).
San Francisco beat out San Diego for a few different reasons. Only 18% of the city’s population is classified as obese, the second-lowest in the country, and 100% of San Francisco’s population lives near a green space or park. On top of that, 100% of San Francisco’s population lives in an area where they can get outside and get physical. Adding to that is that fact that the city is one of the most bikeable and walkable.
San Diego and San Francisco aren’t the only California cities in the Top 10. Huntington Beach is also joining the party in the Number 10 slot. As we dip into the 20s we’ll find other Bay Area cities like Fremont, Oakland, and San Jose.
What city brings up the rear? That unfortunate spot goes to Brownsville, Texas (Number 182) with a total score of 24.07. Brutal.
