California – Tesla is recalling over 46,000 Cybertrucks due to a potentially hazardous issue with an exterior trim panel. The company disclosed that a cosmetic “cant rail” can delaminate and detach from the vehicle, posing a road hazard and increasing the risk of accidents. The recall affects all Cybertrucks manufactured between November 2023 and February 2025.
Affected owners can have their vehicles serviced at Tesla locations for free replacement of the cant rail. This voluntary recall comes amidst growing scrutiny of Tesla and its CEO, Elon Musk, whose involvement in the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency has sparked controversy and protests.
Musk’s political activities and controversial statements have led to increased targeting of the Cybertruck, known for its distinct, unpainted steel design. Owners have reported instances of harassment, vandalism, and rude gestures, reflecting the polarized climate surrounding the vehicle and its creator.
Furthermore, Tesla is facing challenges in the competitive electric vehicle market. Increased competition and trade uncertainties stemming from new tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on goods from Canada, Mexico, and China are adding to the company’s pressures.
The recall covers a significant portion of Cybertrucks currently on the road, highlighting the manufacturing and quality control issues that have plagued the vehicle since its initial deliveries in November 2023. The NHTSA’s website lists nine recalls related to the Cybertruck, indicating ongoing challenges.
Despite these setbacks, Tesla reportedly plans to introduce new battery technology in 2025 that could significantly reduce battery manufacturing costs, according to a report from The Information.
The NHTSA confirmed that the recall was implemented following discussions with the agency, emphasizing that the adhesive used to secure the cant rail can fail, leading to its detachment. However, they also stated that Tesla is not aware of any crashes, injuries, or fatalities related to the issue.
The NHTSA encourages vehicle owners with safety complaints or concerns to file a Vehicle Owner’s Questionnaire online or contact their hotline at 888-327-4236. This allows regulators to track potential safety issues and ensure that manufacturers address them promptly.
