Police lights activated on an Evansville Police Department vehicle.
Fresno, California – A routine Uber pickup spiraled into Thanksgiving-week terror Thursday night when a passenger opened fire on their driver, shooting the 40-year-old victim in the back of the head before disappearing into the dark.
Police say the driver, found slumped over and bleeding near South Tupman Street and East George Avenue, was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. By Friday morning, detectives said they expect him to survive — a rare sliver of luck in a case that reads like a nightmare.
According to investigators, the Uber driver had accepted a ride through the app shortly before 8:15 p.m. Something erupted between driver and passenger — an argument, a struggle, some flashpoint lost in the chaos — and gunfire followed.
What happened next depends on which witness you ask. Some outlets report the shooter fired from inside the vehicle. Others say the gunman stepped out, turned back, and unleashed several rounds before fleeing into the night.
Either way, the passenger vanished. The driver was left behind, bleeding in the street.
The suspect has not been identified. Police say they are digging through ride-share data, digital breadcrumbs, and whatever electronic evidence Uber can provide. Detectives with the Street Violence Bureau are working every lead they can find.
Uber has not issued a public statement. Newsweek confirmed the company has been contacted for comment.
Police are urging anyone with information — no matter how small — to step forward. One passenger pulled the trigger. One driver is lucky to be alive. And Fresno is left sorting through yet another senseless holiday-week shooting.
