Washington D.C. – A humorous Danish petition to “buy California” from the U.S. has rapidly gained traction, approaching 300,000 signatures. The petition, titled “Let’s Buy California from Trump – Denmark’s Next Big Adventure,” is a playful response to President Donald Trump’s repeated suggestions to purchase Greenland, a semiautonomous territory of Denmark.

While the petition is largely lighthearted, it reflects a growing frustration with Trump’s geopolitical ambitions. The Danish public, along with Greenland’s government, has expressed strong opposition to Trump’s idea of acquiring Greenland. In fact, Greenland’s most recent election saw the Demokraatit party, which has been vocal in its rejection of Trump’s proposals, sweep into power. Party leader Jens-Frederik Nielsen called Trump a “threat to our political independence” following the election.

The petition itself is equal parts satire and serious protest. It humorously suggests crowdfunding $1 trillion to purchase California, promising to bring “hygge to Hollywood,” bike lanes to Beverly Hills, and smørrebrød (Danish open-faced sandwiches) to every street corner. The petition even proposes renaming Disneyland to “Hans Christian Andersenland” with Mickey Mouse sporting a Viking helmet. “Mickey Mouse in a Viking helmet? Yes, please,” the petition reads, underscoring the Danish approach to reclaiming California in the name of cozy cultural exchange.

The petition’s creators also pointed out that Trump’s own public criticism of California—calling it “the most ruined state in the Union” due to issues like crime, homelessness, and unauthorized immigration—might make him willing to sell it off. They cheekily suggest that Trump might sell the state “for the right price,” even offering a “lifetime supply of Danish pastries” to sweeten the deal.

Trump’s repeated efforts to purchase Greenland have sparked widespread pushback. Both the prime ministers of Denmark and Greenland have firmly rejected the idea, asserting that Greenland is not for sale. Despite this, Trump has persisted, even hinting at the possibility of using military force to annex the island. A poll conducted in Greenland revealed that 85% of residents do not want to join the U.S., further reinforcing the tension surrounding Trump’s continued pursuit of the territory.

The campaign for a Danish acquisition of California has clearly resonated, gathering nearly 270,000 signatures so far. The petition is aiming for 500,000 by the time it reaches its conclusion. While it may not have serious political ramifications, it highlights the growing discontent surrounding Trump’s approach to international relations and his efforts to expand American influence at the expense of smaller nations.
