Recent enhancements to sections of the U.S.-Mexico border wall in California have introduced anti-climb features designed to deter unauthorized crossings. These modifications, however, have led to increased injuries among migrants attempting to scale the barrier.
The new sections of border wall being constructed at Friendship Park between San Diego, and Tijuana, Mexico, feature an awning that resembles a metal wedge that points directly onto the Mexican side of the border.
The updated sections are intended to make crossing more difficult. Despite these measures, many migrants continue their attempts, resulting in a notable rise in injuries from falls.
Medical professionals in the area have reported a surge in trauma cases linked to these incidents. The heightened risk has prompted criticism from advocacy groups, who argue that the new features compromise migrant safety.
According to Fox 5, the additions to the border wall are prototypes that will be added to additional sections of the structure if they’re successful in keeping migrants from traveling into the country illegally.
