After years of growth, San Diego’s craft brewing industry experienced a record number of closures in 2024, with 11 breweries shutting their doors.
Industry experts attribute these closures to several factors, including economic challenges and evolving consumer preferences. Brandon Hernández, founder and executive editor of San Diego Beer News, noted that the difficulties began with the COVID-19 pandemic and have been compounded by rising real estate and goods costs, higher wages, increased competition, and a slight decline in demand for craft beer.
Changing consumer tastes have also played a role. The legalization of marijuana and the popularity of alternative beverages, such as hard seltzers, have provided consumers with more options, leading to decreased demand for traditional craft beers.
Despite these challenges, the industry saw some positive developments, with six new brewing companies opening last year, double the number in 2023. Some closed breweries have also reopened under new names, indicating a potential consolidation and adaptation within the market.
