In the early hours of February 6, a 25-foot panga-style boat was intercepted near Mission Bay, California, carrying 16 individuals, including two children. The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) initially spotted the vessel adrift approximately 15 miles off the coast around midnight. Upon interception, the occupants—13 men, one woman, and two children—claimed Mexican nationality. Authorities suspect the boat was involved in a maritime smuggling operation.
The USCG, in collaboration with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), has noted an uptick in maritime smuggling attempts along the California coastline. Officials emphasize the dangers associated with such voyages, including overcrowded vessels, lack of safety equipment, and unseaworthy boats, which pose significant risks to passengers.
CBP continues to investigate the incident and urges the public to report any suspicious maritime activity to local authorities.
