
San Diego businesses are grappling with a significant egg shortage, leading to increased prices and operational challenges. Economists attribute the scarcity to a severe bird flu outbreak that has drastically reduced the egg supply nationwide.
At Super Cocina in City Heights, a restaurant known for its egg-based dishes, owner Juan Pablo Sanchez has been compelled to adjust menu prices. Sanchez noted that a number of the restaurant’s dishes are egg-based, and on average, they go through about 1,000 eggs per week. He’s now paying more than four times as much for eggs as he did before the pandemic.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the average price for a dozen eggs last month ranged from $7 to $9. Experts anticipate that these elevated prices will persist in the near future.
