In 2024, San Diego International Airport (SAN) welcomed a record 25.24 million passengers, surpassing its previous high of 25.18 million set in 2019. This milestone reflects a robust recovery and growth in air travel following the COVID-19 pandemic.
The airport’s success is attributed to strategic efforts to expand airline partnerships and route offerings. In 2024, SAN introduced Breeze and Porter Airlines and added service to nine new destinations, including Anchorage, Cincinnati, Columbus, Vail, Jacksonville, Milwaukee, Norfolk, Pittsburgh, and Raleigh-Durham.
International travel also saw significant growth, increasing by more than 10% last year. This surge was bolstered by British Airways doubling its daily flights to London. Looking ahead, international travel is expected to continue its upward trajectory with the addition of service to Amsterdam on KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and daily nonstop flights to Tokyo on Japan Airlines.
Currently, 18 airlines operate out of SAN, offering nonstop flights to 85 destinations. The airport’s ongoing expansion and commitment to enhancing connectivity have solidified its position as a key hub for travelers.
Kimberly Becker, president and CEO of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, stated, “This is a true sign of recovery and growth. Each year following the pandemic, the numbers of travelers recorded at our airport has increased.”
