Waymo, Alphabet’s self-driving unit, has announced plans to expand its autonomous vehicle testing to over 10 new cities in 2025, including San Diego. The company aims to assess how its self-driving system adapts to diverse environments and driving conditions.
In San Diego, Waymo will deploy a limited fleet of vehicles, each operated by trained human specialists. The testing will focus on the city’s busiest commercial districts and complex traffic areas to gather data on the system’s performance.
This initiative is part of Waymo’s broader strategy to understand and improve how its autonomous vehicles generalize to new locations. The company has previously conducted similar tests in various locations, including Truckee, California, upstate New York, and Michigan, to evaluate performance in different weather conditions.
