San Diego, California – Is Golden State Warriors boss Joe Lacob about to jump into the baseball big leagues? Rumors are swirling that the NBA’s championship mastermind could be eyeing the San Diego Padres as his next conquest.
Lacob, 69, isn’t shy about seeking new sporting adventures. A source close to the NBA spilled to the San Francisco Chronicle that the multi-billionaire is always hunting for his next big score—and the star-studded Padres might just make the cut.
Basketball fans know Lacob as the man behind Golden State’s modern dynasty—four titles with the Warriors, plus a historic championship run with the Boston Celtics back in 2008. He’s also the owner of the WNBA’s Golden State Valkyries. The guy’s sports résumé? Nothing short of dazzling.
Dipping his toes into baseball is nothing new for Lacob. Two decades ago, he tried (and failed) to grab the Oakland A’s, and more recently, in 2022, showed serious interest in buying the Los Angeles Angels. Just last year, he spoke about possibly snapping up the A’s if they ever hit the market, telling reporters, “If they were for sale, we’d be crazy not to go after them. But right now, they’re staying put.”
With Forbes pegging his fortune at a staggering $2.3 billion, Lacob has the deep pockets needed to take the Padres to the next level. The franchise soared under Peter Seidler—the late owner’s aggressive spending and hunger for victory set a high bar. But if there’s anyone obsessed with chasing trophies, it’s Lacob. As he told the Point Forward Podcast in 2022, “All I care about now is winning. Championships are my life. I’m relentless about it.”
So, could Major League Baseball’s next headline-grabbing owner be Joe Lacob? Stay tuned—this story could get a lot bigger.
