San Diego, California – Homicide detectives are investigating after a shooting early Wednesday morning left one man wounded near a smoke shop.
The shooting occurred just before 2 a.m. on University Avenue near 43rd Street, less than a quarter-mile south of Interstate 15, San Diego police Lt. Travis Easter said.
When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from at least one gunshot wound in front of a small storefront. The victim was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.
Investigators detained a person of interest at the scene, though that individual has since been released pending further investigation, Easter added. No arrests have yet been made.
At the scene, items of clothing and what appeared to be personal effects lay scattered on the sidewalk, cordoned off by police tape. Detectives are canvassing nearby businesses for security camera footage and interviewing witnesses.
A portion of University Avenue was shut down overnight for the investigation but was reopened just after sunrise, Lt. Easter said.
Officials continue to seek tips from anyone who may have information. Members of the public are asked to contact the SDPD Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or San Diego Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
