San Francisco, California – The Padres’ surge shows no signs of slowing. On Wednesday afternoon in San Francisco, San Diego exploded for a seven-run second inning and cruised to an 11-1 rout over the Giants, completing a three-game sweep and moving a half-game ahead of the Dodgers in the National League West.
Nick Pivetta once again set the tone on the mound, delivering 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball. The right-hander allowed just four hits, walked one, and struck out five while retiring 11 straight at one point. Pivetta improved to 12-4 on the year, giving the Padres yet another dependable arm down the stretch.
The Padres’ offense didn’t waste any time putting the game out of reach. In the second inning, a patient approach paid off, as three walks helped load the bases. Jake Cronenworth broke it open with a two-run single, followed by Fernando Tatis Jr.’s two-run knock. By the time the inning was over, San Diego had plated seven runs — six of them earned — off Giants starter Kai-Wei Teng, who was chased after just 1 2/3 innings.
Ramon Laureano, one of the team’s biggest trade deadline pickups, continued to impress in left field and at the plate. He finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs, two runs scored, and the Padres’ only home run — a two-run shot in the fifth off Joey Lucchesi. The blast marked Laureano’s 17th of the season and gave San Diego a commanding 10-1 lead.
The Giants, meanwhile, find themselves spiraling. They’ve now lost five straight — all at home — and have been outscored 32-5 during that stretch.
For San Diego, the timing of this run couldn’t be better. Just over a month ago, the Dodgers held an 8.5-game lead in the division. That gap has completely evaporated, thanks to Los Angeles’ 12-20 slide over their last 32 games and the Padres’ red-hot 14-3 stretch over their last 17.
With 41 games left, the NL West is very much up for grabs — and the schedule sets up for plenty of drama. The Padres and Dodgers will meet in back-to-back weekend series starting Friday at Dodger Stadium, then again at Petco Park beginning August 22.
The message from San Diego’s clubhouse is clear: they’re ready for the fight. And after Wednesday’s dominant win, they’ve got the momentum — and the standings — on their side.
