San Diego, California – Walker Buehler may have swapped Dodger blue for Boston red, but the Padres’ nightmares remain the same. The right-hander carved through San Diego’s lineup Friday night at Petco Park, tossing six shutout innings in a 10–2 Red Sox rout to open the weekend series.
Nick Pivetta, San Diego’s steadiest arm this season, was sharp early before a disastrous fourth inning cracked the game open. Boston loaded the bases, plated a run on a sac fly, got another on an errant pickoff throw, then watched Wilyer Abreu unload a 423-foot two-run homer to right-center. By the time the inning ended, it was 4–0 and the Friars were chasing.
Things only got worse in the eighth when Sean Reynolds walked the bases full and surrendered a three-run double to Connor Wong. Yoshida added his second homer of the night in the ninth to cap Boston’s scoring.
The Padres’ offense never found its footing. San Diego mustered just four singles off Buehler — two by Luis Arraez — and didn’t score until the game was well out of reach. The loss drops the Friars to 0–1 on the homestand and extends Buehler’s career record against them to 7–1.
Michael King returns from the injured list Saturday to face Lucas Giolito in Game 2, with first pitch at 5:40 p.m.
