Phoenix, Arizona – The Padres are starting to make a habit of ninth-inning magic—and their trade deadline additions are at the heart of it.
San Diego stunned Arizona 3-2 on Wednesday night, scoring twice in the ninth to complete a come-from-behind win and notch their second straight dramatic victory over the Diamondbacks. Ryan O’Hearn and Mason Miller—both acquired just last week—delivered in the clutch as the Padres improved to 9-2 over their last 11 games.
Trailing 2-1 entering the ninth, O’Hearn launched a 391-foot solo shot to right-center to tie the game. It was his first home run since joining the Padres from Baltimore and his first of the season off a left-hander. But the rally wasn’t done.
Xander Bogaerts, who had already homered earlier in the game, followed O’Hearn with a double. After advancing to third on a sac bunt, he came around to score the go-ahead run on a sharp single to right from José Iglesias, another veteran who continues to deliver quietly in big spots.
In the bottom half of the ninth, it was fireballer Mason Miller’s turn. Acquired from Oakland at the deadline, Miller shut the door emphatically, striking out three of the four batters he faced to lock down his first save as a Padre—and his 21st overall on the season.
The victory pulled the Padres within just two games of the first-place Dodgers in the NL West, thanks to L.A.’s earlier loss to St. Louis.
Wednesday’s comeback followed Tuesday’s 11th-inning explosion, when the Padres scored five in extras to beat the D-backs 10-5. This time, the Padres didn’t need extras—just a little late-game thunder from their newest faces.
Starter Nestor Cortes made his first appearance for San Diego since being acquired from Milwaukee. He allowed two runs across 4 2/3 innings and struggled with control early, but kept the game within reach. Adrian Morejón pitched two scoreless frames in relief and picked up his ninth win of the year.
Corbin Carroll hit a solo shot for Arizona and Alek Thomas added a sac fly, but the D-backs couldn’t hold the lead late.
With the series win secured, the Padres are heating up at the right time—and it’s clear the front office’s trade deadline moves are already paying dividends.
