Phoenix, Arizona – Luis Arráez delivered when it mattered most, and the Padres kept their hot streak alive with a wild 10-5 win over the Diamondbacks in 11 innings on Tuesday night in Arizona.
After going 0-for-5 to start the night, Arráez came through in the 11th with a clutch bloop single to left that scored Fernando Tatis Jr. from second, breaking a 5-5 tie. San Diego poured it on from there, adding four more runs in the inning to seal the win — their eighth in the last ten games.
The extra-inning rally made a winner out of a Padres bullpen that had to weather a tough night from the back end of Arizona’s lineup — including two home runs from Lourdes Gurriel Jr. His game-tying solo shot off Mason Miller in the eighth came off a 103.9 mph fastball — the hardest pitch turned into a home run since pitch tracking began in 2008.
But the Padres answered back, showing off their newly upgraded lineup. Ramón Laureano, acquired at the deadline from Baltimore, had his best game yet in a Padres uniform, going 3-for-5 with three RBIs. His two-run double in the seventh briefly gave San Diego a 5-3 lead and capped a five-game stretch in which he’s batting .364 (8-for-22).
Arizona tied it late, but their bullpen couldn’t hang on. After starter Ryne Nelson left with a 3-2 lead in the sixth, relievers Kyle Nelson and Andrew Hoffmann combined to walk four straight batters, forcing in the tying run and swinging momentum back to San Diego.
It was a game of swings, but the Padres showed resilience and depth — both from their new additions and their stars. Arráez may not have had his best night at the plate, but his final swing made the difference.
With the win, San Diego stays hot in the playoff hunt and has a chance to take the series on Wednesday.
