The Tops Friendly Market on Jefferson Avenue in Buffalo is creating a memorial space for those who died at the store after a white man targeted the store to kill Black people. It will be finished by May 14, 2024, in time for the second anniversary of the mass shooting. A memorial event will be held that day from 2-4 p.m.
A New York appeals court ruled that social media companies including Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Reddit cannot be held liable for the 2022 Buffalo supermarket shooting. The court found that Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act shields platforms from legal responsibility for user-generated content, even when violent crimes are involved. Plaintiffs argued these companies allowed extremist material and failed to intervene, but judges said federal law preempted such claims and pointed to Congress for any reforms. Although acknowledging the tragedy, the court emphasized that online platforms are not legally accountable for the actions of users who post harmful content.
