fentanyl pills that weigh 128.7 pounds with an estimated street value of $758,000

Pine Valley, California – Border Patrol agents in San Diego intercepted one of the region’s largest fentanyl smuggling attempts late last week, seizing nearly 129 pounds of the synthetic opioid concealed in the frame of a flatbed trailer.

The bust occurred Friday afternoon, June 27, at the Interstate 8 Border Patrol checkpoint in Pine Valley, about 45 miles east of San Diego. A pickup truck hauling an otherwise empty flatbed trailer was directed to secondary inspection after a K-9 unit alerted agents to the potential presence of narcotics.

Agents conducted a search and discovered 42 bundles of fentanyl pills hidden in aftermarket compartments built into the trailer’s structure. After being tested and weighed at the Campo Border Patrol Station, the bundles were confirmed to contain 128.7 pounds of fentanyl—an amount with an estimated street value of $758,000, according to Customs and Border Protection.

The driver, identified only as a Mexican citizen, was arrested. The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office has accepted the case for prosecution on charges of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute.

“This seizure demonstrates the Border Patrol’s role in protecting American communities,” said Acting Chief Patrol Agent Jeffrey D. Stalnaker in a statement following the bust. “Fentanyl is lethal in even tiny amounts, and intercepting such a large quantity saved countless lives across the country.”

According to the agency, this interception marks one of the largest fentanyl seizures to date for the San Diego Sector, which has become a key corridor for the trafficking of fentanyl and other narcotics from Mexico into the United States. Prior to this incident, agents in the sector had seized 326 pounds of fentanyl so far in the 2025 fiscal year. They’ve also confiscated 2,396 pounds of methamphetamine, 2,586 pounds of cocaine, and 56 pounds of heroin.

Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid up to 50 times more potent than heroin, has been at the center of America’s ongoing overdose crisis. It takes just two milligrams—an amount smaller than a grain of rice—to cause a fatal overdose, making trafficking attempts of this scale especially dangerous to public health.

While the driver’s identity has not been released, the case reflects the increasing sophistication of smuggling operations. Modified vehicle compartments, strategic concealment tactics, and remote border routes have made enforcement more complex and labor-intensive.
