Lake Tahoe, California – A boating trip on Lake Tahoe ended in tragedy Saturday afternoon when a 27-foot vessel capsized amid sudden and severe swells, leaving six people dead and two others missing, according to local and federal authorities.
The U.S. Coast Guard reported that the boat, a gold Chris-Craft, overturned near D.L. Bliss State Park around 3 p.m. as winds picked up and waves reached six to eight feet in height. The lake, typically a summer haven for outdoor recreation and tourism, turned hazardous within minutes, witnesses said.
Emergency crews responded quickly to reports of ten people in the water. According to the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office (EDSO), first responders rescued two survivors and transported to a nearby hospital. Authorities have yet to release the conditions of the two survivors.
Local boat captain Joby Cefalu told South Tahoe News that this was a “tragic day.” Several local witnesses described the storm’s arrival as sudden and intense, catching boaters off guard and creating dangerous conditions.
As of Saturday night, search efforts for the two missing individuals were paused due to low visibility and worsening weather but are expected to resume Sunday morning. EDSO’s search and rescue and dive teams will lead the recovery operation.
“The identities of the deceased will not be released until next-of-kin notifications have been made,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
Lake Tahoe, known for its clear waters and alpine vistas, draws thousands of visitors each year, especially during the summer months. While boating accidents are rare, unexpected weather patterns and strong winds can make the large alpine lake unpredictable and treacherous.
The Coast Guard and local officials have urged boaters to remain aware of changing weather conditions and to wear life jackets at all times while on the water. It is unclear whether those aboard the vessel were wearing flotation devices.
The incident has cast a somber tone across the Lake Tahoe region as the community mourns the loss of life and holds out hope for the missing. Further updates from rescue teams are expected this week.
