La Jolla – County health officials reopened beach access on Spindrift Drive and Princess Street in La Jolla on Tuesday after recent water quality tests showed improved conditions following a sewage spill.
The closures, which were put in place Monday, stemmed from a 178-gallon sewage leak. A spokesperson for the City of San Diego said the cause of the spill remains under investigation.
While La Jolla beaches reopened, the County Department of Environmental Health and Quality (DEHQ) issued new contamination advisories for several areas in Mission Bay due to elevated bacteria levels. Affected areas include Fanuel Park, the northwest shoreline of Fiesta Island, and the Tecolote Shores swim area. Officials warned that exposure to the water in these areas “may cause illness.”
Some other locations along the San Diego coast remain under previously issued advisories. Those include La Jolla’s Children’s Pool and Bonita Cove in Mission Bay.
Meanwhile, beach closures remain in place further south, where contamination linked to sewage runoff continues to affect the shoreline. The Tijuana Slough, Imperial Beach Shoreline, Silver Strand Shoreline, and Avenida Lunar in Coronado are still off-limits to swimmers and surfers.
DEHQ stated that the aforementioned beaches will remained closed until sampling confirms that the areas are safe for water contact.
Residents and visitors can get the latest information on beach advisories and closures by calling the 24-hour County hotline at 619-338-2073 or by visiting the DEHQ’s website.
