Milwaukee, Wisconsin – The San Diego Padres came within inches of a stirring comeback win Saturday night, only to see it undone one pitch into the bottom of the ninth.
Caleb Durbin, a little-known rookie with just one home run to his name, turned a potential Padres rally into a Milwaukee celebration, launching a walk-off solo shot to left-center field to give the Brewers a 4-3 win at American Family Field.
It was a deflating end for San Diego after Luis Arraez tied the game with a clutch, two-out, two-run double in the top of the ninth—capping off a gritty comeback that gave the Padres a flicker of hope.
David Morgan (0-1) was tagged with the loss after delivering the game’s final pitch—an 0-0 offering that Durbin jumped on for his second career homer, and first in nearly two months. Padres reliever Stephen Kolek had previously spun 5 2/3 shutout innings, giving San Diego a shot at its second win of the series. Instead, the loss dropped the Padres to 33-32 on the season.
Before the ninth-inning drama, it was a tight, low-scoring affair defined by timely hits and missed opportunities.
San Diego got on the board first in the fourth. Jackson Merrill led off with a single, moved to second on a walk to Jose Iglesias, and came around to score on Elias Díaz’s two-out RBI single to left. That run stood until the seventh, when a Padres error helped Milwaukee even the score on a Jake Bauers sacrifice fly.
The Brewers added two more in the eighth. A bases-loaded sacrifice fly from Rhys Hoskins plated Christian Yelich, and Isaac Collins followed with an RBI single to put Milwaukee ahead 3-1.
Then came the Padres’ late push. Díaz singled with one out in the ninth, and Xander Bogaerts drew a two-out walk. With the game on the line, the duo executed a double steal, setting the table for Arraez, who delivered with a rope into the left-field corner to score both runners and tie the game.
Arraez advanced to third on the throw home, but Padres fans’ hopes of taking the lead evaporated when Manny Machado grounded out to short, stranding the go-ahead run just 90 feet away.
Trevor Megill (1-2), who gave up the lead in the top half, wound up with the win after Durbin’s game-winner moments later.
The Padres will look to salvage the series in Sunday’s finale behind Dylan Cease. First pitch is scheduled for 11:10 a.m. PT.
