San Diego, California – Back home after a tough 2-7 road trip, the Padres showed resilience and timely execution Monday night at Petco Park, rallying from an early deficit to beat the Miami Marlins 4-3 in 11 innings.
San Diego fell behind 3-0 in the second inning but chipped away thanks to a two-run double from José Iglesias in the fourth. The game turned in the eighth when Manny Machado tied it with a solo home run to left-center—his sixth of the season—off Miami reliever Calvin Faucher.
After a scoreless 10th, the Padres broke through in the 11th. Tyler Wade, who replaced Machado as the automatic runner, advanced to third on a groundout. Miami then intentionally walked Xander Bogaerts and brought in an extra infielder. But on a 1-2 count to Jake Cronenworth, Marlins reliever Cade Gibson spiked a curveball in the dirt, allowing Wade to race home with the winning run.
Adrián Morejón (2-2) earned the win for San Diego after stranding a Marlins runner at third in the top half of the 11th. Gibson (0-2) was tagged with the loss.
Miami struck early, scoring twice in the first on hits from Jesús Sánchez, Agustín Ramírez, and Otto Lopez. Sánchez added to the lead in the second with a 417-foot solo shot to center—his third homer of the year. Padres starter Randy Vásquez recovered well, finishing with 6 1/3 innings and allowing three runs.
The Padres’ comeback began with two outs in the fourth. Bogaerts singled and stole his 10th base of the season before a throwing error allowed Cronenworth to reach. Luis Campusano walked to load the bases, and Iglesias cleared two of them with a double to left.
Former Padre Ryan Weathers started for Miami, allowing two unearned runs over 5 2/3 innings. San Diego’s bullpen was sharp, and rookie David Morgan contributed by retiring both batters he faced in his MLB debut.
The win improves the Padres to 30-22 and provides a much-needed lift as they look to gain momentum at home.
