Tehachapi, California- Rapper Tory Lanez was hospitalized Monday morning after being attacked at a California prison where he is serving a 10-year sentence for the 2020 shooting of hip-hop star Megan Thee Stallion, authorities confirmed.
Lanez, born Daystar Peterson, was assaulted around 7:20 a.m. in a housing unit at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi, according to Pedro Calderon Michel, spokesperson for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
Although Michel did not disclose the nature of the injuries, multiple media outlets reported that Lanez was stabbed during the incident. Prison staff responded immediately, providing medical aid and calling emergency services. Lanez was then transported to an outside hospital for further treatment. His current condition has not been disclosed.
The prison’s Investigative Services Unit and the Kern County District Attorney’s Office are now reviewing the circumstances surrounding the attack.
Lanez, 31, was convicted in December 2022 on three felony charges: assault with a semiautomatic firearm, possession of a loaded unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence. The charges stem from a July 2020 incident in which Lanez shot Megan Thee Stallion, whose legal name is Megan Pete, in the feet after a party at Kylie Jenner’s Hollywood Hills residence.
During the trial, Megan testified that Lanez shouted at her to dance before shooting at her as she walked away from an SUV. The case drew intense media coverage and ignited national conversations about violence against women in the music industry, especially Black women.
Lanez’s legal team unsuccessfully sought a new trial earlier this year and has filed an appeal of the conviction. His attorneys have not commented on the prison incident.
In January 2025, a judge issued a protective order against Lanez, extending through 2030, after Megan alleged he was attempting to harass her from behind bars using third parties. The order bars Lanez from any form of contact or harassment.
Lanez began serving his sentence in late 2023 and was transferred to the Tehachapi facility earlier this year. The California Correctional Institution is a medium-security prison located about 100 miles north of Los Angeles.
Authorities have not yet released details about the motive behind the attack or whether any suspects have been identified. The investigation remains ongoing.
