New York – In a game that had everything from rain delays to emotional ejections, the San Diego Padres staged a stunning late comeback to beat the New York Yankees 4-3 Monday night at Yankee Stadium.
Delayed twice by rain — once at the start of the game and again in the fourth inning, both lasting 28 minutes — the contest looked like a washout in more ways than one for the Padres. Heading into the eighth inning, San Diego trailed 3-0 on a soaked field and seemed destined to have their five-game winning streak snapped.
Then, chaos turned into a catalyst.
The Padres loaded the bases with two walks and a hit off Yankees reliever Devin Williams. Tensions boiled over after Fernando Tatis Jr. struck out swinging, one pitch after a borderline called strike at the bottom of the zone. Tatis barked at home plate umpire Adrian Johnson and was promptly ejected — the first such instance of his Major League career. Padres manager Mike Shildt exploded out of the dugout to defend his star, hurling his lineup card and glasses in a fiery tirade before getting tossed himself, marking the 15th ejection of his managerial career.
But the fireworks didn’t end there — they ignited a comeback.
Manny Machado ripped a two-run double to left-center, cutting the deficit to 3-2. Xander Bogaerts followed with a clutch two-run single, capping a stunning four-run rally — all with two outs.
From there, it was up to closer Robert Suarez, who locked down the ninth inning to preserve the win. Suarez remains perfect on the season with 14 saves in 14 opportunities.
The Padres’ passion-fueled comeback turned what had been a frustrating night into one of the season’s most emotional wins. Shildt’s fire appeared to light a spark, and the team responded with resilience and timely hitting.
The series continues Tuesday, with San Diego expecting to activate rookie Jackson Merrill after a four-week stint on the injured list due to a hamstring strain.
