San Diego, California – The San Diego Padres kept their winning streak alive Friday night, riding a big performance from Luis Arraez to a 9–4 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Arraez, fresh off a concussion, collected three hits and drove in three runs as the Padres notched their third straight win. Since returning to the lineup, the reigning batting champ is 6-for-12 and quickly reasserting himself as the spark plug of San Diego’s offense.
But the victory came with a dose of concern. Star outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. was forced to exit the game in the third inning after taking a 93 mph fastball from Mitch Keller off his left forearm. Swelling was immediately visible, and although initial X-rays were negative, the Padres are anxiously awaiting further evaluation. Tatis, who has been scorching hot to start the season with a .345 batting average, eight home runs, and a 2.1 WAR (third-best in the majors), is central to San Diego’s hopes for a deep postseason run. The team is already dealing with key injuries, including outfielder Jackson Merrill, second baseman Jake Cronenworth, and veteran starter Yu Darvish.
Despite the setback, the Padres found offense in all corners of their lineup. Gavin Sheets tied the game in the fourth with a solo homer, his fourth of the year. Xander Bogaerts and Taylor Wade helped keep the momentum going before Arraez gave San Diego the lead for good in the fifth with a run-scoring double. He later added a two-run single in the eighth that broke the game wide open. Oscar Gonzalez and Brandon Lockridge also contributed key hits, while Jason Heyward capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the ninth.
Padres starter Dylan Cease labored through four innings, throwing 91 pitches and giving up two runs on three hits and three walks. He didn’t factor into the decision, but reliever Jeremiah Estrada came in and struck out the side in the seventh to earn the win and slam the door on a Pirates rally. The Padres’ bullpen — already the best in the majors with a 1.77 ERA coming into the night — continued its dominance, holding Pittsburgh scoreless over the final three innings.
Keller, who fell to 1–3 on the season, allowed five runs (four earned) over five innings. The Pirates mounted a comeback effort by scoring in four straight innings to cut the deficit to 5–4, but they couldn’t keep pace after the Padres teed off on lefty Caleb Ferguson in the eighth.
The Padres now sit with one of the best team ERAs in baseball and continue to pile up wins despite a bruised and battered roster. Randy Vásquez is slated to take the mound Saturday as San Diego looks to secure the series win against Bailey Falter and the slumping Pirates, who have dropped three of their last four games. For the Padres, all eyes will be on updates about Tatis. With his MVP-caliber start to 2025, losing him for any extended time could mean more than just a bruise to the forearm — it could bruise the Padres’ playoff aspirations.
