Los Angeles, California – For the second consecutive start, Dodgers pitcher Tyler Glasnow left a game early — and this time, the injury may be more serious.
Glasnow exited Sunday’s 9-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates after feeling discomfort in his right shoulder while warming up for the second inning. After allowing back-to-back home runs in the first, Glasnow returned to the mound but the training staffed checked his shoulder before he threw another pitch. The Dodgers later announced that they pulled Glasnow due to shoulder issues, and manager Dave Roberts acknowledged that a stint on the injured list is “certainly a possibility.”
“We’ve got to get him to a place where we feel and he feels that when he takes the mound, he can go out there and be the guy that he’s capable of being,” Roberts said. “Until he gets to that point, the IL is certainly a conversation.”
Glasnow had exited his previous start in Texas due to leg cramping, a precautionary move. He received an IV before Sunday’s start to prevent further hydration issues, but Glasnow said he felt something “grab” in his shoulder while throwing warmups for the second inning. The right-hander believes that mechanical changes he made to his delivery before the season may have contributed to the discomfort.
“Just making a lot of changes, trying to figure out a way to stay healthy, I think some of the changes led to other things kind of taking over,” Glasnow said. “It’s just extremely frustrating.”
Ben Casparius entered in relief and was a bright spot for the Dodgers, pitching 3 2/3 scoreless innings with five strikeouts. Casparius continues to be a key piece for a Dodgers bullpen that has logged a Major League-high 121 1/3 innings so far, while the starting rotation has thrown a league-low 124 2/3 innings.
Injuries have been a persistent problem for Glasnow, whose career was interrupted by arm troubles, including right elbow tendinitis last season. His latest setback is another blow to a Dodgers rotation already missing Blake Snell, who remains sidelined with shoulder inflammation.
There is, however, some help on the horizon. Tony Gonsolin, who hasn’t pitched in a big league game since undergoing Tommy John surgery last August, is expected to make his season debut Wednesday against the Marlins after completing his rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City.
