Los Angeles, California – Los Angeles police have released dramatic body camera footage showing the chaotic moments leading up to the shooting of author Jillian Lauren, the wife of Weezer bassist Scott Shriner, during a tense backyard encounter earlier this month.
Lauren, 51, was shot and wounded by officers on April 8 in the Eagle Rock neighborhood of northeast Los Angeles. Her injuries were not life-threatening. According to authorities, Lauren exited her home barefoot while holding a pistol as LAPD officers and California Highway Patrol officers searched the area for three suspects who had fled a nearby car crash.
Lauren — identified in police records as Jillian Lauren Shriner — was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and released on $1 million bond. She is scheduled to appear in court later this week.
On Friday, police released excerpts of body camera footage, backyard surveillance video, and audio from 911 dispatch calls. Officers peer over a tall wooden fence in the bodycam clips while a police helicopter buzzes overhead. They repeatedly shout at Lauren to drop her weapon before firing on her.
“Ma’am, we’re trying to help you. Put the gun down. You’re going to get shot. It’s the police,” one officer is heard shouting.
Moments later, an officer notes that Lauren “racked” the gun — a motion to ready it for firing — before they fired a volley of at least six gunshots. The cameras’ view remains partially obscured by the fence throughout the encounter.
Separate surveillance footage from Lauren’s backyard shows her carrying a pistol out of the house. In another clip, she appears to raise the weapon as dirt is kicked up at her feet, possibly from police gunfire. She then turns back toward the doorway.
Further footage shows Lauren lying face-down in the street, bleeding from an arm wound, as officers handcuff her.
Lauren is the author of two bestselling memoirs: Some Girls: My Life in a Harem (2010) and Everything You Ever Wanted (2015).
Her husband, Scott Shriner, joined Weezer in the early 2000s. The band, based in Los Angeles, remains a major force in rock music, best known for their 1994 self-titled debut, popularly known as the “Blue Album,” featuring hits like “Buddy Holly” and “Say It Ain’t So.”
The incident remains under investigation.
