Sacramento, California – In a dominant pitching performance, five San Diego Padres pitchers combined to limit the Oakland Athletics to just two hits and one run in a 2-1 victory on Wednesday. The win gave the Padres two out of three in their series in Sacramento, improving their record to 10-3, making them the first team in Major League Baseball to reach 10 wins this season.
The game was set up early by Randy Vásquez, who started for San Diego. Vásquez (1-1) went five solid innings, giving up only one hit and one run, which came in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Luis Urías. After Vásquez’s departure, the Padres bullpen took control, with Adrian Morejon, Jeremiah Estrada, Jason Adam, and Robert Suarez each contributing a perfect inning of relief.
Suarez, who picked up his third save of the season, sealed the game in the ninth with a scoreless frame, preserving the Padres’ 2-1 lead.
The Padres’ offense provided just enough support to secure the victory. Xander Bogaerts, who had a stellar day with three hits, scored both of San Diego’s runs. He crossed the plate in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Gavin Sheets after Oscar Gonzalez’s line drive was mishandled by A’s center fielder JJ Bleday. The Padres tied the game at 1-1 with that run.
In the fifth inning, Bogaerts scored again, this time on a single by Oscar Gonzalez. Gonzalez, who also had two hits on the day, was a key contributor to the Padres’ offense.
Despite out-hitting the Athletics 12-2, the Padres left 11 runners on base but managed to hold onto the slim lead thanks to stellar pitching and defense. Manny Machado and Jason Heyward also each added two hits to the Padres’ total.
The Athletics’ lone run came in the second inning, when Urías’ sacrifice fly scored Jacob Wilson, who singled earlier in the inning. Wilson extended his hitting streak to 13 games, tying for the second-longest such streak in Athletics’ history to start a season. Stan Javier holds the record with 17 games set in 1994.
In an impressive stat, the Athletics were held without a home run for the first time this season, ending a club-record streak of home runs in each of their first 12 games.
San Diego was without three of its key players on Wednesday. Fernando Tatis Jr. and Jake Cronenworth, who both left Tuesday’s game with injuries, were day-to-day and did not play. The Padres also lost top prospect Jackson Merrill to the 10-day injured list earlier in the week, leaving Sheets to step into the cleanup spot in the lineup.
Up next, the Padres return home to begin a six-game homestand starting Friday against the Colorado Rockies. San Diego will send Nick Pivetta (1-1, 2.70 ERA) to the mound to face Rockies’ starter German Marquez (0-1, 2.45 ERA) at Petco Park.
The Athletics will stay at home to face the New York Mets on Friday, with Griffin Canning (0-1, 2.79 ERA) slated to take on JP Sears (1-1, 3.46 ERA).
