San Diego, California – San Diego County drivers experienced an unexpected traffic delay Sunday afternoon when a helicopter was forced to make an emergency landing near Interstate 15.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the helicopter suffered an engine failure around 2:20 p.m., prompting the pilot to land on N Centre City Parkway near Jesmond Dene Road in unincorporated Escondido. Despite the close call, no injuries were reported.
The emergency landing briefly caused significant traffic slowdowns on nearby I-15, a major interstate that runs from the U.S.-Mexico border in San Diego County to Canada. CHP officers and San Diego County Sheriff’s deputies responded quickly to the scene.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) were notified of the incident and later granted CHP permission to remove the aircraft from the roadway.
