California – California residents will see a series of Bank of America branch closures in 2025 as part of a broader national trend toward digital banking. The bank plans to shut down at least seven locations across the state, affecting communities in San Jose, San Francisco, Huntington Beach, and more.
The closures will begin in April, with the Grass Valley branch being the first to shut its doors. Other locations in San Mateo, Davis, and Camarillo will also be affected, with the final San Francisco closure scheduled for December.
The downsizing of brick-and-mortar banking has accelerated in recent years, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2023, the U.S. experienced the highest number of bank failures since the 2008 financial crisis. The trend has continued into 2024, with banks notifying federal regulators of 145 planned branch closures nationwide between February and March alone.
Experts warn that this shift toward online banking could disproportionately affect elderly customers, low-income individuals, and people with disabilities, who may struggle with digital alternatives. Studies have also shown that branch closures disproportionately impact racially diverse communities, raising concerns about equitable access to financial services.
Industry analysts predict the trend will continue, with some forecasting the end of in-person banking as early as 2041. If projections hold, 2025 could see a 4% increase in branch closures compared to last year’s total of 1,043 nationwide.
