San Diego, California – San Diego FC’s impressive start to their inaugural season came to an end Sunday with a 2-1 loss to Austin FC in east Texas. The expansion side, which had previously enjoyed a four-match unbeaten streak, faced its first defeat.
Austin FC struck early, with Chula Vista native Brandon Vasquez scoring in the 10th minute against his hometown team. Vasquez capitalized on a through ball from Diego Rubio, beating San Diego’s goalie CJ dos Santos. Just nine minutes later, Jon Gallagher added a second goal for Austin, putting San Diego down by two.
San Diego FC responded in the 27th minute when Torrey Pines High School alumnus Luca de la Torre scored his first goal for the club. De la Torre’s shot, from just outside the box, deflected off an Austin defender and into the net. Despite several strong saves from both goalkeepers, San Diego FC was unable to find an equalizer.
The loss marks the first time San Diego FC has trailed by two goals in a match this season. Here’s hoping the team rebounds as they return home to face LAFC at Snapdragon Stadium on Saturday, March 29, at 7:30 p.m.
