Pacoima, California – A fireworks explosion in Pacoima has left a 24-year-old man critically injured and displaced more than two dozen families. The incident occurred around 9 a.m. on Remington Street, and authorities believe it was caused by the illegal manufacturing of fireworks.
The injured man, suspected of manufacturing the fireworks, sustained first-degree burns to at least 50% of his body. He is currently in critical condition and is expected to face multiple charges upon recovery.
The explosion caused significant damage to a home and prompted the evacuation of surrounding residences due to the presence of undetonated fireworks and hazardous chemicals. The Los Angeles Fire Department reported that 26 families have been displaced, with 15 under mandatory evacuation orders and 11 under evacuation warnings.
Officials anticipate the evacuations will last until at least Monday or Tuesday as they conduct a thorough investigation and safely remove the remaining explosives and chemicals. “It would be a good idea to anticipate, like I said multiple times, it’s going to be slow and methodical due to the nature of the investigation,” said LAPD Officer Kevin Terzes. “I would anticipate at least a day or two, but be flexible.”
Hotel vouchers have been offered to the displaced families, and the American Red Cross has established an emergency shelter at the Ritchie Valens Recreation Center, located at 10736 Laurel Canyon Blvd.
The Red Cross is providing shelter, food, water, and emotional support services to those affected.
