San Diego, California – Three people died last week during separate attempts to cross the U.S.-Mexico border within the Otay Mesa Wilderness area, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials reported. Both incidents occurred on Friday, within an hour of each other, as temperatures in the mountainous region dropped to near-freezing levels due to a winter storm.
In the first incident, Border Patrol agents responding to a distress call found a deceased woman near the Cuchama Truck Trail. She and another woman had crossed the border illegally about five miles west of the Tecate Port of Entry.
Less than an hour later, another distress call led to the discovery of a 16-year-old girl and two deceased men. The girl, who was hospitalized and then processed at a Border Patrol station, was the daughter of one of the deceased men. The group had illegally crossed the border and requested assistance after becoming lost and experiencing hypothermia.
