Sacramento, California – California Governor Gavin Newsom met with the heads of all 10 Mexican Consulates across the state last week in Sacramento to discuss new ways to collaborate and support Californians, especially those from mixed-status families. The meeting aimed to strengthen the partnership between the Mexican government and California, focusing on key issues affecting local communities.
“At this pivotal moment, our continued partnership and collaboration on key issues is more important than ever,” Newsom wrote on X (formerly Twitter) after the meeting. He emphasized the shared cultural ties between Mexico and California, noting their common goal of supporting the success of residents, particularly immigrants, in the state’s economy and local communities.
The consul generals from Fresno, Sacramento, Calexico, Los Angeles, Oxnard, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, and Santa Ana participated in the meeting. Fresno’s Consul General, Nuria Zúñiga, and Sacramento’s Consul General, Christian Tonatiuh González, were among the officials attending.
While specific details about the discussions were not immediately available, the meeting was a clear indication of California’s ongoing efforts to support the state’s diverse immigrant population, including those who face challenges due to their mixed-immigration status. Newsom’s office confirmed that the state is working to ensure immigrants and their families have access to legal resources and protections under federal law.
The Mexican Consulate in Sacramento shared a message on Instagram, emphasizing the unity between Mexico and California in supporting the migrant community. “The Government of Mexico reaffirms its commitment to working closely with the State of California to protect and support our migrant community,” the post read in Spanish. “We thank @cagovernor and his team for their leadership in inclusive policies that strengthen the well-being of migrants in the state.”
In addition to legal assistance, Newsom’s office highlighted the state’s ongoing efforts to support workers and business owners within immigrant communities. This includes funding for legal help to assist individuals navigating immigration processes and access to necessary federal protections.
The meeting is part of a broader initiative to ensure that California remains a welcoming and inclusive state for immigrants and that their needs continue to be met as they contribute to the state’s diverse economy.
