Los Angeles, California – With the first day of Spring arriving this Thursday, many Californians are making plans to travel, particularly for spring break. But as travelers head out, the FBI is urging caution, especially for those heading abroad. The agency issued a warning on Monday for California families and students to take extra precautions when traveling to popular destinations, particularly in Mexico.
Several areas in Mexico have been hit with a spike in crime, including kidnappings and violent attacks targeting tourists. As a result, the U.S. Department of State has issued travel advisories urging Americans to avoid or reconsider travel to several Mexican states, including Colima, Guerrero, Michoacán, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas, and Zacatecas. Areas like Mazatlán, Mexicali Valley, and Acapulco are also under caution, as well as Baja California, Rosarito, Tijuana, and Ensenada. These warnings follow an alarming rise in crime that has made these regions unsafe for tourists.
It’s not just Mexico that’s affected. The State Department has also issued advisories for Jamaica, urging travelers to avoid certain areas on the island due to crime. Costa Rica and Cuba also received warnings to exercise increased caution due to rising criminal activity in those countries.
Akil Davis, FBI Assistant Director in Charge, emphasized that travelers need to be vigilant, whether they’re taking a family vacation or seeking a quick getaway from the stress of school. “Whether it’s families looking to escape the final throes of winter or a college student seeking a brief respite from the rigors of academic life, know that the risks are there,” he said.
To ensure safety, the FBI has outlined several key precautions for travelers to follow:
- Establish emergency contacts: Before heading out, set up points of contact with family or friends in case of an emergency.
- Travel in groups: Avoid traveling alone, especially after dark, and stay aware of your surroundings. Stick to well-populated, well-lit areas.
- Use authorized transportation: Only use official taxis or shuttle services. There have been incidents where tourists were robbed or even kidnapped after using unverified transport.
- Avoid risky behavior: Don’t engage in illegal activities or make decisions that could compromise your safety, like accepting offers of sexual companionship, which could lead to dangerous situations.
- Stay alert to surveillance: Be aware of anyone following you or watching your movements, and report any suspicious activity to local authorities immediately.
The FBI encourages travelers to report any dangerous or suspicious activity to the FBI or submit anonymous tips through their website at tips.fbi.gov. By staying informed and taking proactive safety measures, travelers can ensure their Spring break is a safe and enjoyable one.
