Washington, D.C. — President Donald Trump expressed optimism on Friday about the possibility of ending the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, citing what he called “productive” discussions between U.S. and Russian officials.
“We had very good and productive discussions with President Vladimir Putin of Russia yesterday, and there is a very good chance that this horrible, bloody war can finally come to an end,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.
However, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt later clarified that Trump himself had not spoken with Putin. Instead, U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff met with the Russian leader in Moscow on Thursday night.
According to a source familiar with the meeting, Witkoff’s discussion with Putin lasted several hours, during which the Russian president conveyed key “signals” to Trump through the envoy. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that the meeting took place and said both sides were working to arrange a direct phone call between Trump and Putin.
Putin’s message to Trump remains undisclosed, but the Kremlin has consistently maintained that it seeks an end to the conflict on its own terms, including territorial concessions from Ukraine.
Trump also stated that he had requested Putin to spare the lives of Ukrainian forces reportedly “completely surrounded” in the Kursk region. Ukrainian troops had briefly gained a foothold on Russian territory before facing a major counteroffensive.
The situation in Kursk has raised concerns about potential escalations in the war. Kyiv has yet to comment on Trump’s remarks, and the exact status of Ukrainian forces in the region remains unclear.
Trump has repeatedly called for a ceasefire, warning that the conflict has the potential to spiral into World War III. He has positioned himself as a mediator, urging both sides to agree to a swift halt in hostilities.
The war, which began in 2022, has claimed tens of thousands of lives and devastated large parts of Ukraine. While previous ceasefire attempts have collapsed, Trump’s administration appears to be pursuing direct engagement with Moscow to broker a deal.
The prospect of peace talks remains uncertain. Ukraine has maintained that any negotiations must include a full withdrawal of Russian troops from its territory, while Russia has insisted on keeping control of occupied regions.
As diplomatic efforts continue, the international community will closely watch whether Trump’s optimism translates into tangible progress toward ending the war. Meanwhile, a potential direct conversation between Trump and Putin could prove to be a pivotal moment in the conflict.
