San Diego, California – San Diego FC has announced a comprehensive plan to combat discriminatory chants at its home matches, following a homophobic incident that marred the club’s inaugural home game on March 1. The Major League Soccer (MLS) expansion team aims to create a safe and inclusive environment for all fans, implementing a series of pre-match messaging, enhanced security measures, and strict policy enforcement.
The incident, which involved repeated use of a homophobic slur during the team’s scoreless draw against St. Louis City, drew widespread condemnation from the club and its supporters. In response, San Diego FC has taken decisive action to prevent future occurrences.
“We are committed to fostering an inclusive and respectful environment for all fans,” the team stated in a press release. “Discriminatory language and behavior will not be tolerated at our matches.”
To reinforce this message, ticket buyers will receive a “Know Before You Go” newsletter emphasizing the club’s commitment to inclusivity. Seat cupholders will feature flyers with the message “Aquí No” / “Not Here,” serving as a constant reminder that discriminatory language is unacceptable.
Prior to kickoff, key figures within the club, including CEO Tom Penn, coach Mikey Varas, midfielder Aníbal Godoy, and leaders of the team’s supporters’ union, will deliver messages of unity and inclusivity, reinforcing the zero-tolerance policy. A banner displaying the same message will be prominently featured in the supporters’ section.
In addition to these messaging initiatives, San Diego FC will significantly increase the number of stadium security personnel, particularly in key areas and near the opposing goalkeeper’s section. This heightened security presence aims to deter and identify offenders, who will be ejected from the stadium and may face further sanctions.
The club will also implement the FIFA three-step protocol, which allows for the stoppage, suspension, or abandonment of a match if discriminatory behavior persists. This protocol underscores the seriousness with which the club is addressing the issue.
The specific chant in question, a one-word Spanish slur, is commonly used by fans during opposing goalkeeper goal kicks and has been a persistent problem in both club and national team soccer in Mexico. San Diego FC’s proactive measures aim to break this cycle and establish a new standard for respectful behavior within the stadium.
By implementing these comprehensive strategies, San Diego FC hopes to create a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere for all fans, ensuring that the focus remains on the beautiful game and the spirit of sportsmanship. The club’s actions send a clear message that discriminatory behavior has no place within their stadium and will not be tolerated.
