After several hours, the danger was deemed unfounded, and there were no shooters or victims.
Loma Linda, California – A children’s hospital in Southern California was thrown into a state of alarm Wednesday after an alleged mass shooting threat prompted a significant response from law enforcement.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department responded to a call regarding a possible armed individual at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital on Anderson Street in Loma Linda on March 12.
Deputies conducted a thorough sweep of the hospital, evacuating parts of the building as part of the investigation. However, no evidence of a shooting or an armed individual was found. San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus later confirmed that the alleged threat was a hoax.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that no injuries occurred during the incident.
Prior to the confirmation that the situation had been resolved, the hospital issued a brief statement: “Law enforcement has responded to the Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital Emergency Department. It is an active investigation and all media inquiries can be directed to San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department PIO.”
Authorities believe the incident was a “swatting” call, in which a false report is made to trigger a large-scale police response. As of Wednesday night, no arrests had been made in connection with the hoax.
“Swatting” is a criminal offense, and individuals caught making such false reports face criminal charges.
The incident caused significant disruption and anxiety at the children’s hospital, but thankfully, no one was harmed. The investigation into the source of the false report is ongoing.
