Ventura, CA – A Tesla Cybertruck ended up underwater in Ventura Harbor on Monday morning after the driver mistakenly put the vehicle in reverse while attempting to launch a Jet Ski, according to reports.
The driver, a Ventura man, had been offloading a personal watercraft when the accident occurred, the Ventura County Star reported. Instead of moving forward, the truck reversed into the water, becoming partially submerged. The driver was able to escape unharmed.
Footage from the scene shows emergency responders working to retrieve the electric pickup from the harbor. The truck remained underwater for nearly two hours before being pulled out, though the recovery process itself took approximately 30 minutes.
“We purposely did not rush into the response to allow time to research all potential hazards and ensure contingency plans were in place,” Capt. Carson Shevitz of TowBoatUS Ventura told the Star.
The incident comes after Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously claimed the Cybertruck would be “waterproof enough to serve briefly as a boat.” However, this latest event suggests that reality may not fully align with that statement.
