They waited to cross the Suchiate River that divides the two countries between Guatemala and Mexico in hopes of heading north to the United States. Under pressure from the United States, Mexico shut the bridge in an effort to halt another wave of migrants, mostly Hondurans, from crossing the border into Mexico. Photo by Nick Oza, Gannett. Point Loma, California – U.S. Coast Guard personnel intercepted nine migrants off the coast of Point Loma late Monday night in a suspected human smuggling attempt.
The Coast Guard’s Maritime Security and Safety Team from Los Angeles, along with the Coast Guard Cutter Petrel, stopped a 20-foot powerboat approximately seven miles southwest of the Point Loma peninsula, authorities said.
All nine migrants aboard the vessel were taken into custody and subsequently transferred to U.S. Border Patrol.
Authorities have not released any further details regarding the incident.
This interception follows a similar incident just over a week ago, where the Coast Guard interdicted more than 20 migrants off the same stretch of coastline.
