Lyle and Erik Menendez, convicted in 1996 for the murder of their parents, are scheduled for a resentencing hearing in March, which could make them immediately eligible for parole.
The proposed resentencing follows former Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón’s recommendation last year to resentence the brothers to 50 years to life. Gascón, who lost his reelection bid to Nathan Hochman in November, had suggested the move after considering the brothers’ rehabilitation during their decades in prison.
The Menendez brothers were convicted of killing their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in their Beverly Hills home. Prosecutors at the time asserted the motive was financial gain, stating there was no evidence of molestation. While the brothers alleged sexual abuse, many of those details were excluded from their original trial.
Current District Attorney Nathan Hochman is reviewing the case, which involves thousands of pages of prison records, and has met with the brothers’ relatives.
The case has recently garnered renewed public attention due to the Netflix true-crime drama, “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.”
The March hearing will determine whether the resentencing will proceed, potentially leading to the brothers’ immediate parole eligibility.
