President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Tuesday to initiate a study focused on making in vitro fertilization (IVF) more affordable and accessible. The order directs policymakers to explore ways to “protect IVF access and aggressively reduce out-of-pocket and health plan costs for such treatments,” as detailed in a fact sheet released by the White House.
The announcement comes as Trump stands behind the need for universal coverage of IVF treatment, a stance he adopted following the Supreme Court’s reversal of Roe v. Wade. Concerns have arisen in certain Republican-led states where definitions of life have begun to extend protections to embryos, potentially endangering IVF access.
At a press event held at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, Trump signed a second executive order pertaining to governmental oversight and called for increased transparency from federal agencies. This initiative, outlined by White House staff secretary Will Scharf, aims to implement “radical transparency requirements,” mandating the government to reveal instances of “waste, fraud, and abuse” as part of its broader efficiency objectives.
Barbara Collura, President and CEO of RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association, expressed optimism about the administration’s focus on IVF treatments, emphasizing that “the biggest barriers for people to building their families are the out-of-pocket costs.”
During his remarks, Trump stated, “I think the women and families, husbands, are very appreciative of it.” He has been a vocal supporter of IVF, particularly after developments in state laws that threaten access to fertility treatments.
In addition to his focus on IVF, Trump used the press conference to critique the Biden administration on various issues, including border security and foreign policy.
