President Donald Trump announced plans to overturn energy efficiency regulations implemented during President Joe Biden’s tenure, targeting standards for household items such as light bulbs, showerheads, and toilets. He directed Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin to reinstate previous guidelines established during his first term. On Tuesday, Trump posted to Truth Social:
I am hereby instructing Secretary Lee Zeldin to immediately go back to my Environmental Orders, which were terminated by Crooked Joe Biden, on Water Standards and Flow pertaining to SINKS, SHOWERS, TOILETS, WASHING MACHINES, DISHWASHERS, etc., and to likewise go back to the common sense standards on LIGHTBULBS, that were put in place by the Trump Administration, but terminated by Crooked Joe.
The Department of Energy, responsible for setting these standards, had under Biden’s administration enforced regulations that phased out incandescent light bulbs in favor of energy-efficient LEDs and updated efficiency requirements for appliances like washing machines and dishwashers. These measures aimed to reduce energy consumption and lower consumer costs.
Critics argue that rolling back these standards could lead to increased energy usage and higher utility bills for consumers. However, supporters of the move assert that it restores consumer choice and addresses concerns over federal overreach in personal household decisions. We’ll see how it goes.
