Emmy-nominated actor and producer Issa Rae has become a part owner of San Diego FC, the city’s Major League Soccer expansion team. Making the announcement on Tuesday, Rae stated, “I believe in the power of soccer to unite communities, and I am excited to contribute to the growth of the sport in San Diego.”
San Diego FC is set to begin its inaugural season in 2025, with home games to be played at Snapdragon Stadium. The team has been actively building its ownership group and community presence ahead of its debut.
Rae’s involvement is a part of a growing trend of celebrities investing in sports teams, specifically soccer. In a statement, San Diego FC CEO Tom Penn expressed excitement about Rae’s involvement, stating:
… with Issa joining our ownership group, we are further strengthening our commitment to growing its impact both domestically and globally. Her influence and perspective will be invaluable as we continue building a world-class football Club that reflects the diversity and energy of San Diego. Just as importantly.
