The California Lottery has announced that, for the third consecutive year, it has generated over $2 billion in funding for public education. This achievement underscores the lottery’s ongoing commitment to supporting the state’s educational system. In the 2023-2024 fiscal year, the lottery raised a record of more than $2 billion for education.
The California Lottery was established in 1985 with the primary mission of providing supplemental funding to public education. Since its inception, it has contributed more than $46 billion to schools across the state.
These funds are distributed to K-12 schools, community colleges, the California State University, and University of California systems, as well as other educational entities. The consistent financial support has been instrumental in enhancing educational programs, purchasing essential materials, and supporting various student services.
The lottery’s success in generating substantial revenue for education is attributed to strong ticket sales, including popular games like Powerball and Mega Millions. Notably, a record-breaking $2.04 billion Powerball jackpot in November 2022 significantly boosted contributions, raising $156.3 million for schools statewide. As the California Lottery continues to innovate and attract players, it remains a vital source of funding for the state’s educational institutions, helping to shape the future of millions of students.
