Firefighters have made significant progress in containing the Border 2 Fire, which has burned approximately 6,625 acres in the Otay Mountain Wilderness area near the U.S.-Mexico border. As of Wednesday morning, the blaze is 90% contained.
The fire, which began on January 23, prompted evacuation orders for residents east and south of Otay Lakes Road, south and west of Campo Road, along Otay Mountain Truck Trail, and north of the southern edges of the burn zone. These evacuation orders remain in effect as crews continue to address hotspots and strengthen containment lines.
No structural damage or injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Due to ongoing firefighting operations, Otay Lakes Road remains closed to through traffic between State Route 94 and Wueste Road.
Fire crews are focusing on mopping up and patrolling existing fire lines, with no further spread anticipated. High humidity and recent rainfall have aided in suppressing fire activity. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels for updates on evacuation orders and road closures.
