Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego and Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) have finalized their merger, creating the largest pediatric healthcare network in California. The unified entity, named California Children’s Health Network (CCHN), aims to enhance pediatric care across Southern California by combining resources, expertise, and services.
The merger, announced in early 2024, received regulatory approval in December and became official on January 1, 2025. CCHN now operates over 800 inpatient beds, multiple outpatient centers, and a comprehensive network of pediatric specialists, serving more than 1.5 million children annually.
Dr. Patrick Frias, former CEO of Rady Children’s Hospital and now CEO of CCHN, emphasized that the merger will improve access to specialized care, reduce duplication of services, and foster innovation in pediatric healthcare. He stated, “By coming together, we can leverage our collective strengths to provide the highest quality care for children and families across the region.”
The merger is expected to streamline operations and expand services, including the development of a new pediatric research institute focusing on childhood diseases and advanced treatments. Additionally, CCHN plans to invest in telemedicine to reach underserved communities and enhance mental health services for children and adolescents.
While the merger has been met with optimism, some concerns have been raised about potential impacts on employment and patient care. CCHN has assured that there are no immediate plans for staff reductions and that the focus remains on patient-centered care. The organization has committed to maintaining existing programs and services at both campuses while exploring opportunities for growth and improvement.
The formation of CCHN marks a significant milestone in pediatric healthcare, positioning the network to address the evolving needs of children and families in Southern California. As the largest pediatric healthcare provider in the state, CCHN aims to set new standards in clinical excellence, research, and community outreach.
